Help Your Garden to Survive the Freezing Weather

Over the past couple of years ice and snow seem to havebecome a regular

part of our winters. However both the freeze and the thaw can cause problems

for our gardens, we have put together a few tips and hints that may be useful

as this weather persists.

Stay off frozen or heavily frosted lawns as much as possible, if the grass blades

are crushed whilst frozen they run the risk of greater cellular damage than usual

and it will take longer for them to recover once thawed out.

Salt is great for clearing pathways and hard standing areas, but not so good

when it gets into planting beds. Wherever possible avoid using rocksalt near

to your flowerbeds as the salty run off can seriously harm plants – unfortunately

the most eco-friendly method of snow clearance is still the good old shovel!

Don’t forget the impact that the freezing weather has on garden creatures, encourage

your garden birds to stay around by putting out higher nutrition food such asfatballs

or blocks which contain seeds and mealworms. Don’t forget that fresh water is also

important , a teaspoon or two of liquid glycerine (available in the baking section of

most supermarkets) added to the water could help to prevent it freezing.
